The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides low-cost health care coverage to children whose families earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford to buy private insurance.
If you’re new to CHIP, you’ll choose a health plan for your child from the options available in your service area.
Learn how to choose or change your health plan.
To get CHIP, a child must be:
• 18 years old or younger;
• a Texas resident;
• a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen; and
• in a family that meets the income guidelines
Services Covered by CHIP
Members in the CHIP program can get services like:
• Regular checkups with the doctor and dentist
• Medicine and vaccines
• Hospital care and services
• X-rays and lab tests
• Vision and hearing care
• Access to medical specialists and mental health care
• Treatment of special health needs and pre-existing conditions
Some CHIP members with special health care needs receive service coordination. A service coordinator can make sure you get the health care services you need from your health plan. If your child gets Medicaid, you will choose a plan from the ones available in your service area.
